Semaine Olympique Française - Hyères - Hyeres puts on another great sailing show. |
HYÈRES, FRANCE-(30-4-2004) Hyeres regatta is one of our favourite Grade 1 events on the Olympic circuit and is always a well organized competition. We have had a complete mix of conditions again this year with very light and tricky sailing for the first few days, to some good steady 15 to 18 knot winds on day 4. Day 5 was also a standard Hyeres day with very windy conditions and 50 knot winds gusting over the bay, picking up the waves as it goes. Racing was cancelled for the day at 2.30 pm. The final day of racing did not go as well as we planned with more light winds and some incorrect decisions making for some bigger scores. Lessons have been learnt again! Jenny and I got off to a slow start, with some lower scores in the lighter winds. We had a bit of luck when one of the races in which we were looking at the transoms of a few too many boats was abandoned. As we improved our observation and communication, and continued to search for consistency, we improved on the 3rd day. Then, we got everything right on the 4th day.
It was a really fun day of racing. We had great starts, good speed, good technical skills, great team work and minimum mistakes. This is a recipe for a good day in sailing and we finished with 3 bullets out of 3 races.
The final day of racing did not go as well, with more light winds and some incorrect decisions making for some bigger scores. We dropped from 1st to finish 4th overall.
We have finished packing up, and together with our training partners, will travel to Croatia for the worlds. We have a 10 hour drive and a time limit as we have to catch a ferry from Ancona in Italy to Zadar in Croatia. We begin measurement for the Worlds on the 7th of May, so we have a few days training before then getting used to the waters of the Adriatic. I hope they are warmer than the northern Mediterranean.
Fair sailing and thanks to you all for the continued support,
Belinda and Jenny www.sailinggirls.com.au
